Of late people seem to be identifying much with vintage clothing - clothes that were worn some decades back in the 1940s. Notably, the popular places to buy those clothes are said to be secondhand stores.

According to ecowarriorprincess  there used to be a stigma associated with buying vintage clothing.

JulietLace in one of her blog posts expresses her joy in that there is no longer stigma and prejudice attached to the style. She is thankful that vintage wear has become more acceptable to wear and shop for.

Emmanuel Ndlovu, however, says he loves vintage because it’s a unique style that is distinct from other styles

“Vintage clothes are unique. It’s a lovely style that I have fallen in love with. I think it’s pretty cool that the very same clothes that our grandfathers found fashionable we are now finding it fashionable in this day and age,” said Ndlovu

Priscah Mwaramba, 57, on the other hand, expressed that she was happy when vintage wear became common. She feels vintage wear is more original and classic compared to other fashion clothing from Chinese exports.

“I am glad we now have shops that sell clothes and fashion styles that were worn long ago. These clothes are more classic and authentic, you can’t compare vintage to any other styles. They are just glamorous” Mwaramba said

However, there are some people who still think its bad obsession to wear clothes that were worn by someone. I tend to differ from these people; generally I wouldn’t mind buying the clothes if they are in good condition. As for me I buy second hand clothes because it is the best way to save the little money I have.

However, there are many reasons why people are now going for vintage fashion.

Some express joy in the price of vintage clothing compared to other fashion style.

“ I bought this dress at $5 at Kay marks compared to $15 to 20$ clothes that are sold at a flea markets, said one woman who identified herself as  Mai Nyasha along fort street and 9th Avenue in Bulawayo.

For Samantha Mlalazi a finance administration intern at Lupane State University, vintage wear makes her feel more comfortable and confident.
“I like myself in vintage clothes, I wear vintage because of how it make me feel. It makes me feel good and I believe if you feel god you look good,” she said.

Hip hop fashion

Vince Mula, a publishing student from the National University of Science and Technology says hip hip hop fashion has corrupted our minds a little. For Mula, however, it has corrupted him positively. He feels hip hop fashion is a blessing because it makes him feel confident.

“The hip hop thing is a blessing to me, I feel confident in everything that I do. Seeing role models in music videos , you then change a bit to try and match them, act like you are with them, like we knew each other. When doing things you won’t notice that you are imitating these guys. It looks like you came from the dynasty. Or like we have some genes it happens automatically,” he said

Mula’s role models are Weeezy, Birdman and Rozay. He explains that in every award such as BET Awards the guys try to show what’s new in hip hop fashion.

“The fashion thing just happens spontaneously, Weezy will be looking awesome in those videos and the music will be in you as a result you want to be like them and you try to match them”

Mula understands that people have different perspectives on hip hop and fashion. The common view being that hip hop music is violent. However, he maintained that the issue of violence depends on individuals and how mannered they are citing that the importance of hip hop music lies in it lyrics.

“Yeah some people believe hip hop makes you big headed, but the most important thing about hip hop is its lyrics, its not violent, it’s all about the truth” he said

However, while hip hop seem to be contributing positively to some youth like Mula, some feel it corrupts people negatively.  For instance, in a story published  by Chronicle about a University of Zimbabwe student who made a suicide video before hanging himself the parents were attributing his death to influence of hip hop music.
