Of
late people seem to be identifying much with vintage clothing - clothes that
were worn some decades back in the 1940s. Notably, the popular places to buy
those clothes are said to be secondhand stores.
According to ecowarriorprincess there used to be a
stigma associated with buying vintage clothing.
JulietLace in one of her blog posts expresses her joy in that there is no longer stigma and prejudice attached
to the style. She is thankful that vintage wear has become more acceptable to
wear and shop for.
Emmanuel Ndlovu, however, says he loves
vintage because it’s a unique style that is distinct from other styles
“Vintage
clothes are unique. It’s a lovely style that I have fallen in love with. I
think it’s pretty cool that the very same clothes that our grandfathers found
fashionable we are now finding it fashionable in this day and age,” said Ndlovu
Priscah
Mwaramba, 57, on the other hand, expressed that she was happy when vintage wear
became common. She feels vintage wear is more original and classic compared to
other fashion clothing from Chinese exports.
“I
am glad we now have shops that sell clothes and fashion styles that were worn
long ago. These clothes are more classic and authentic, you can’t compare
vintage to any other styles. They are just glamorous” Mwaramba said
However,
there are some people who still think its bad obsession to wear clothes that
were worn by someone. I tend to differ from these people; generally I wouldn’t
mind buying the clothes if they are in good condition. As for me I buy second
hand clothes because it is the best way to save the little money I have.
However,
there are many reasons why people are now going for vintage fashion.
Some
express joy in the price of vintage clothing compared to other fashion style.
“
I bought this dress at $5 at Kay marks compared to $15 to 20$ clothes that are
sold at a flea markets, said one woman who identified herself as Mai Nyasha along fort street and 9th Avenue
in Bulawayo.
For
Samantha Mlalazi a finance administration intern at Lupane State University,
vintage wear makes her feel more comfortable and confident.
“I
like myself in vintage clothes, I wear vintage because of how it make me feel.
It makes me feel good and I believe if you feel god you look good,” she said.
