It appears
more and more people are now wearing dreadlocks despite gender or class. It is
common knowledge that dreadlocks have existed since ancient times, it is only
in recent years that they have become socially acceptable among diverse groups
of people.
One student who identified herself as Zinhle
Malinga expressed her joy in wearing locks which she feels they empower her and
help her challenge the normal established order.
“Dreadlocks make me feel in control, I feel masculine,
long back they were for men, but now everyone, and even us women wear them."
“I take pride in opposing the status quo or what society
expects of me
People expect me to be dolled up, wear all sorts of
hair styles that are believed to be feminine, “she added.
Melusi Sithole, however, expressed that his joy in
dreadlocks lie in their uniqueness and the fact that they cut across the
boundaries of beauty usually defined by the Western culture.
Sithole
feels wearing dreadlocks is a symbol of pride in their heritage and appreciation
and acceptance of their natural hair texture.
“For many
years, the standard of beauty in Western society has included long, straight
hair. For people of African descent and other ethnicities who did not have
naturally straight hair, achieving this ideal required the use of harsh
chemicals and/or heat styling which don’t come at a cheap price. For me dreadlocks
mean that the people of African descent no longer feel the need to conform to
Western beauty standards.”
Nonhlanhla Mabhikwa, a fourth year student studying
Journalism and Media studies, however, expressed that she like locks because it’s
her natural hair in addition to that it is cheap at only $15 a month compared
to at least $30 she required to maintain her artificial weaves.
Other students and Bulawayo residents interviewed said they go for dreadlocks because its a
hairstyle like many other styles that is driven by an individual choice and
that is seen as cool popular thing to do.
These are among
people who just follow fashion trends because they are styles on the block.
Besides they usually emulate popular artists and musicians who wear them, I suppose.
